Big Brother, Little Chief

5th March 2010 10:20AM

A "massive tribe" of Braid supporters will be at the Chiefs v Reds match at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton tonight.

Over lunch in Hamilton yesterday Reds flanker Daniel Braid and his younger brother, Chiefs loose forward Luke Braid, joked that there has been a lot of demand for tickets from family members for the match.

Daniel, 29 is starting at number seven for the Reds as well as being the team's vice-captain, while Luke, 21, is named on the Chiefs bench for loose forward cover.

Luke thinks most of the family will be "sitting on the fence" when it comes to showing loyalty to either the Chiefs or the Reds. A 30-plus strong contingent of Braid family members from Tauranga and Auckland are making the trip to Hamilton tonight.

"There is a massive tribe coming along," says Daniel.

The last time the two brothers played in the same rugby game was a 2008 Air New Zealand Cup match between Auckland and Bay of Plenty in Rotorua.

Daniel remembers the match vividly stating that his little brother tackled him around the legs, he fell at an odd angle and was subsequently injured.

There is a chance the two brothers will again be face to face on opposing teams tonight if Luke gets a chance off the Chiefs bench.

Over their lunch of Japanese food, the two brothers are very supportive of each other's rugby careers.

"I'm definitely very proud of Luke. I stayed up the other night when he was playing his first game against the Lions," said Daniel.

While Luke said he's been following the Reds form closely over the past few weeks.

"They've (Reds) been playing well and that game against the Crusaders was awesome, I was jumping up and down for them in the hotel watching that game. But obviously won't be doing that this weekend," shared Luke.

Luke enjoyed his debut for the Chiefs in Johannesburg in round two of the Rebel Sport Super 14. He has two Chiefs caps to his name to date. He is a specialist number seven, just like his brother Daniel.
