Chiefs 20 - Blues 30

15th May 2010 10:20AM

The Chiefs went down 20-30 to the Blues at Eden Park in Auckland tonight in the last game of Rebel Sport Super 14 played in New Zealand.

It was a match in which scoring was slow to start with due to a combination of great defence from both teams at times, combined with plenty of turnovers.   Chiefs halfback Brendon Leonard impressed on defence - at one stage denying the Blues a try due to an accurate and effective one-on-one tackle.

The Blues scored first with a try to Paul Williams, followed by a conversion from Stephen Brett.  Later on in the first half new Chiefs first five-eighth Trent Renata slotted his first points with the Chiefs with a successful penalty.  The Blues then went onto score another try via Benson Stanley.  However, Renata kept the Chiefs in the chase with another penalty before the end of the first half.

At the break the Blues led the Chiefs 12-6.

In the second half the Blues enjoyed another try to halfback Alby Mathewson, but Brett was unsuccessful at converting.  He went onto kick a penalty minutes laters.  But then it was the Chiefs turn to show some spark with a great try by Chiefs captain Liam Messam, with Renata converting.

But the Blues soon got the better of the Chiefs with Rudi Wolfe crossing the line twice to allow his team to get a maximum five points out of their final game of the season.

However, the Chiefs kept fighting until the end finishing with an impressive try from Seven's speedster Save Tokula who was playing in only his second match for the franchise.  Renata, who enjoyed a good night with the boot, slotted the conversion.

Renata's two points were to be the last points scored in the final Rebel Sport Super 14 match played in New Zealand.
