Chiefs 37- Western Force 19

28th February 2010 12:58AM

It became three wins from the three games on tour for the Chiefs when they beat the Western Force 37-19 at ME Bank Stadium in Perth early this morning.

The Chiefs, in hot conditions, came away with five points from the match. The Chiefs now have 14 points in total from their last three games against the Sharks, Lions and the Western Force. Never before in Chiefs history has the team enjoyed success to this level while playing away from home.

With a slight delay to the start of the match due to lighting issues at the stadium, the Chiefs scored the first points of the match through the boot of the first five-eighth Stephen Donald with a penalty.

Midway through the first half the Chiefs got their try-scoring break. A skillful gather of the ball from halfback Brendon Leonard, combined with great running from prop Nathan White. The tighthead prop then off-loaded in a timely manner to fellow front rower hooker Hika Elliot who crossed the try-line.

After a successful conversion from Donald, the Chiefs went onto gain a further three points through a penalty.

The Western Force scored two penalties in the first half, and the Chiefs led 16-6 at the break.

In the second half the Western Force started strongly with two penalties bringing them within one point of the Chiefs. However, then the momentum went the way of the Chiefs with Donald, again accurate with the boot, slotting a penalty in the 50th minute.

Up and coming Chiefs lock Culum Retallick secured the ball from a Western Force lineout, passed it to wing Dwayne Sweeney who then connected with speedster Lelia Masaga. The 23-year-old winger, playing his first game of the season for the Chiefs, then put his foot down to run away with a try in the corner. Donald converted.

The next Chiefs try came the way of number eight Colin Bourke, and once again was converted by Donald. At this stage the Chiefs led 30-12. However, Ryan Cross then gave the Western Force a boost with an intercept try.

With the Chiefs reserves bench cleared, it was the team's youngest player Tim Nanai-Williams who scored the Chiefs' final, and bonus-point, try of the match. Donald again converted.

The Chiefs will now fly home to New Zealand this weekend to prepare for their first home game of the season against the Reds at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton on Friday night.
