Good Things Come to Those Who Wait

Good things come to those who wait. It is a proverb which was fitting for the Chiefs at the weekend.

It has been six years since the Chiefs last won a round one match in the Rebel Sport Super 14. It was back in February 21, 2004, that the Chiefs kicked off the competition with a win - on that occasion victorious against the Hurricanes, 19-7, at Waikato Stadium.

Still on the patience theme, post-match Chiefs coach Ian Foster praised the Chiefs' composure shown against the Sharks.

"It was almost an unlikely sort of Chiefs performance. We didn't sort of blast them at turnover ball and we probably didn't win it through our attack. We probably won it through our discipline and our patience. It's very pleasing."

Chiefs first-five eighth Stephen Donald said the Chiefs players were "pretty proud" of their victory in Durban.

"This is a win we are really proud of. The Sharks at home are a tough prospect if you came here at full strength. But we had a few key guys out and I think five debutants playing. We know it's only round one but we haven't tasted success in round one for about six years."

It wasn't an easy day at the office for Donald who had a beer container thrown at him before lining up for the final crucial penalty.

"It is the first time things have gone a little pear-shaped for me as far as kicking and the crowds."

Note for Chiefs fans: the first Chiefs home game is scheduled for Friday 5 March against the Reds at Waikato Stadium at 7.35pm. Tickets are available now via www.chiefs.co.nz and the usual ticket outlets (listed on the website). Adult prices range from $15 to $45.
