Into his sixth season as Coach for the Chiefs, Ian Foster is an experienced coach with a strong, loyal affiliation to the Chiefs franchise. Born and bred in the Chiefs franchise, he coached the Chiefs to their first semi-final spot in the Rebel Sport Super 12 competition in 2004. Foster is a former Chiefs player having played 26 games for the franchise from 1996 to 1998. He is also the most capped Waikato player, with148 games played for the province from 1985 to1998.
