Chiefs beat Highlanders

The Chiefs beat the Highlanders 38-36 in Queenstown yesterday in their second pre-season match.

Just as Chiefs coach Dave Rennie predicted the Chiefs match against the Highlanders in Queenstown was a tough encounter with the Chiefs taking the win 38-36.

The Chiefs got off to a strong start leading 31-10 at one stage with the Highlanders clawing back the deficit.  The Chiefs were hammered in the penalty count during the second half which meant the visitors struggled to gain continuity.

Tries went to Chiefs Robbie Robinson, Richard Kahui and Aaron Cruden who crossed the chalk line twice.  The Chiefs were also awarded a penalty try from a collapsed maul.

Dave Rennie said “We got the win, had a pleasing start, but we still have got a lot to work on, especially at ruck time.”

The Chiefs will play the Hurricanes next Friday in Taupo before their rematch against the Highlanders in round one of the Investec Super Rugby competition in Hamilton on Saturday 25 February.
