Damian McKenzie began his playing career representing the New Zealand Under-20 during the 2014 IRB Junior World Championship.

McKenzie made his Investec Super Rugby debut for the Gallagher Chiefs in 2015. After a memorable 2016 Super Rugby season he was called into the All Blacks for the June Internationals; and he made his debut off the bench against Argentina.

McKenzie has also represented the Māori All Blacks from 2015 to 2017.

A player with many strings to his bow, McKenzie originally specialised at first five-eighth but is also known for his outstanding ability in the fifteen jersey.

McKenzie suffered a season-ending knee injury while playing Super Rugby for the Chiefs in 2019 and missed out on selection for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. He returned for the Chiefs in 2020 and was later renamed in the All Blacks in 2020. McKenzie was a standout for the Gallagher Chiefs in 2021 and was selected once again for the All Blacks.
