Kennedy Simon to captain Chiefs Manawa
Rugby World Cup winning Black Fern Kennedy Simon will once again lead the Chiefs Manawa as they chase another Sky Super Rugby Aupiki title.
The outstanding loose forward was a dominant player in 2023, putting in consistent, strong performances throughout the season. This saw the team make their second Sky Super Rugby Aupiki final with a tenacious effort against eventual winner, Matatū.
Chiefs Manawa head coach Crystal Kaua said: “Kennedy drives the standards and lives the values. She cares deeply for her teammates and is always looking inward at how she can be better. She’s a weapon on the field and a fabulous role model off it.”
Simon was selected for the 2023 Black Ferns squad ahead of their Pacific Four Series and named co-captain alongside Ruahei Demant for another season. For 2024, she is incredibly honoured to have another opportunity to captain the Chiefs Manawa.
“I love the legacy of this franchise, the strong group of men and women who have allowed us to thrive in this space, and most of all the relentless supporters we have. We fell short where it mattered last season so are motivated to go one better this year.
“I love this team and this game and ultimately want to continue to forge a path for our future wāhine to aim for the stars.”
The Chiefs Manawa have now assembled to prepare for their first match of the season which will be played at FMG Stadium Waikato on 2 March against the Hurricanes Poua. Tickets are available now from www.chiefs.flicket.co.nz.
